Frequently Asked Questions about Food Tours in Rotterdam

You can look at Rotterdam. You can also taste it. During our food tour, you discover the city through flavours, stories and local entrepreneurs. Not a standard “quick bite and move on” route, but a tour where food tells you something about Rotterdam: about migration, entrepreneurship, neighbourhoods, traditions and new influences. Because let’s be honest: sometimes you understand a city better through a dumpling, a kapsalon or a local beer than through a date on a building.

Below, we answer the questions we often receive about our food tour in Rotterdam.

Practical

What is a food tour in Rotterdam?

A food tour in Rotterdam is a guided experience where you discover the city through food, stories and local places. You walk or cycle past different food stops and taste small dishes or drinks that each tell you something about Rotterdam.

But it is not just a route where you hop from snack to snack. Between tastings, we also stop at interesting places, buildings and sights in the city. There, we share stories about Rotterdam, so you do not only taste where you are, but also better understand what you are looking at.

At Inside Rotterdam, a food tour is not just about “nice food”, although that certainly helps. We use food and the city as a way to understand Rotterdam better. The city has been shaped by the port, migration, post-war reconstruction, entrepreneurship and a rich mix of cultures. You see that in the streets, and you taste it along the way.

A good food tour does not only introduce you to new flavours. It also helps you look at the city differently: at streets, buildings and places you may have passed before, but that suddenly reveal a story.

How long does the food tour take?

We have two versions of our guided food tour. The compact food tour takes around 2.5 hours. During this route, we stop at 3 food stops and 1 drink is included. This is a good option if you want to taste and discover Rotterdam in an accessible way, without filling half your day.

The extended food tour takes around 4 hours. This version includes 5 food stops and 2 drinks. It gives more room for stories, sights along the way and, of course, more tasting. So no rushed snack race, but a relaxed route where food, city and stories come together nicely.

For private groups and companies, we are happy to help decide which version best fits your schedule, group size and appetite. Also not unimportant.

What tastings are included in the food tour?

During our food tour, you taste several small dishes and drinks at local businesses. Think of a dumpling in Chinatown, a mini-kapsalon, a chocolate from a local chocolatier, a Greek delicacy or a local beer with a bitterbal.

The exact tastings can vary depending on the day, route, availability and group composition. We like working with local entrepreneurs, and they are not anonymous conveyor belts. Thankfully.

What always stays the same is this: we choose tastings that fit Rotterdam and the story of the city. So no random snacks just to fill your stomach, but flavours with context. Tasty, and with a reason.

Is the food tour enough for lunch?

Yes, the food tour is more than enough for lunch. You taste several small bites and drinks along the route, spread over different stops. It is not a full seated three-course lunch, but more like a generous walking lunch or extended drinks-style experience.

It is good to know that a food tour works differently from a regular lunch. You eat across several stops and combine that with walking, stories and discovering the city.

For corporate groups, we can also extend the food tour with extra bites or dinner afterwards. Useful if you want to make sure even the colleague with the legendary appetite is fully satisfied.

What makes a food tour in Rotterdam special?

Rotterdam may be one of the most interesting cities in the Netherlands for a food tour. Not because the city has one classic cuisine, but precisely because so many influences come together here.

Thanks to the port, migration, international communities and an entrepreneurial mindset, you find flavours from all directions in Rotterdam. From street food to local makers, from old family businesses to new concepts.

During our food tour, food becomes a way to look at Rotterdam differently. A bite is never just a bite. It says something about a neighbourhood, an entrepreneur, a history or a change in the city. And yes, of course it also has to taste good. We remain practical.

What is the difference between a food tour and simply going out for dinner?

Going out for dinner is lovely. Please do. But a food tour is something different. During a food tour, you do not sit at one table all afternoon. You move through the city, visit different places, meet local entrepreneurs or hear their stories, and discover how food is connected to Rotterdam. The route makes the difference.

You do not only taste; you also look at your surroundings differently. A street, market hall, shop or small food place suddenly gains meaning. You better understand why certain flavours are found here and what they say about the city.

So: going out for dinner fills your evening. A food tour fills in your picture of Rotterdam. And yes, your stomach a little too.

Private tours & Corporate

Can you also book the food tour privately?

Yes, you can. We offer different ways to discover Rotterdam through food. You can choose our self-guided food route with a web app, you can do this on foot or by bike. This means you go without a guide and follow the route on your phone. Ideal if you like discovering the city at your own pace, but still want a good route, stories and food stops.

We also offer two guided food tours: a route of around 2.5 hours with 3 food stops and 1 drink, and an extended route of around 4 hours with 5 food stops and 2 drinks. During both tours, the guide tells you not only about the food, but also about the city, the sights and the stories behind the places you pass.

For private groups, companies and international guests, we can adapt the food tour to the group. Think of language, dietary wishes, start time, pace, start and end location, or a combination with drinks, lunch or dinner. We can also create a tailor-made food tour by bike. Useful if you want to see more of the city and taste along the way.

In short: you can head out by yourself, walk with a guide, or when the programme calls for it taste the city by bike. Rotterdam has more than one flavour.

Is the food tour suitable as a corporate outing?

Yes, a food tour is very suitable as a corporate outing. It is accessible, social and more meaningful than simply eating together. Colleagues discover the city, taste different things along the way and naturally have time to talk in between.

That makes the food tour suitable for teams, departments, international colleagues, client programmes or groups looking for something informal, but still well organised.

For companies, we can offer the food tour as a private experience and combine it with drinks, lunch, dinner, a water taxi, a bike tour or another element. This way, it becomes more than a standalone activity: it becomes a programme that fits your group and planning.

Dietary requirements & Vegetarian options

Can you take dietary wishes into account?

Yes, in many cases we can take dietary wishes into account, as long as we know about them in time. Think of vegetarian, no alcohol, no fish or specific allergies.

Because we work with several local entrepreneurs, we need to coordinate dietary wishes properly in advance. Not everything is possible at every stop, but we do our best to arrange suitable alternatives. The earlier we know, the better we can organise this.

For serious allergies, we always ask you to clearly inform us in advance. Then we can honestly check what is safe and feasible. We prefer not to improvise with allergies. That rarely ends well.

Is the food tour suitable for vegetarians?

Yes, the food tour is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, as long as we know in advance. That way, we can arrange alternatives at the stops.

Rotterdam is a city full of flavours and influences, so vegetarian certainly does not have to mean boring. In fact, many of the best food stories are not only about meat or fish, but about spices, traditions, street food, family businesses and new food cultures.

Please always mention your wishes when booking. Then we can make sure the route and tastings fit as well as possible. Last minute can sometimes work too, but advance notice is much better. For everyone.
